Hair Removal
Chapter 3

Topical solutions:

Another relatively new method on the market, this one is not permanent, but fairly long term. It is fairly interesting, as it uses plant enzymes to change the actual hair follicle so that when the hair grows, it is less course, more like soft baby hair. These solutions must be applied for a number of weeks only after the hair is otherwise removed (waxing is best). After several weeks of treatment, the hairs will eventually disappear. They are also inhibited from growing back for many months at a time and the method is a completely painless (with the exception of the waxing) and only moderately expensive. It has the added advantage of being easily performed at home.

Electrolysis or Electrology:

Is the only time tested permanent method for hair removal - although its drawback is that it is quite an expensive and uncomfortable procedure. A multiple needle machine inserts a needle into the hair follicle and the hair is zapped with an electric current killing the papilla, which is the place of germination when a new hair is formed. Thermolysis is similar, although in this instance, it is heat that is used to disable the hair follicle instead of electricity. There are also techniques that use both methods. The reason that many treatments are needed is because the hairs that are dormant are not being destroyed, making it necessary to keep going back until you've been enough times to destroy all of the hairs in different cycles. One caveat however, don't expect the results over night. It has been several of our reader's experience that the process can take years.

A very common problem associated with hair removal is ingrown hair, which is simply when a hair begins to grow underneath the skin. It is quite easy to correct this by using an exfoliant on the face, a loofah sponge or something similar on the body. If this doesn't work, get out the tweezers. It is important to put on a little rubbing alcohol to prevent infection.

Depending on your skin type, the amount of pain you are willing to tolerate and your budget, you will find that some of these methods will suit your needs better than others. Though we may sometimes seem like slaves to vanity, at least we won't be embarrassed by unwanted hair when lounging on the beach.
