Trying to Conceive
Chapter 2
If you want some variation, but are still trying to conceive you
may want to consider the reclined side by side position. You can
do this either face to face from the front, or entering the vagina
from behind. Either of these positions are very comfortable and
don't require as much physical energy (a benefit if you've been
trying hard to conceive and are getting tired out!) Another position
which works well is rear entry intercourse (otherwise known as doggy
style). Again, it allows sperm to be ejaculated at the point of
entry of the cervix.
A few other general tips regarding logistics include:
1- Keep the penis inside the vagina for as long as possible after
ejaculation to prevent sperm leakage.
2- Gently press the vaginal lips together after the penis has been
withdrawn to prevent leakage.
3- Have the woman stay lying on her back (preferably with a pillow
under her abdomen) for an additional 20-30 minutes after intercourse.
4- Obey the laws of gravity and avoid standing or sitting positions
or the woman on top position for intercourse, because the ejaculate
will leak out, rendering those positions less effective.
5- While the man must certainly achieve orgasm for conception to
occur, there is now some evidence supporting increased chances of
conception should the female also experience orgasm. The theory
is that the contractions she has during climax will help the sperm
travel into the cervix.
6- For women with a tipped uterus, the rear entry (doggy-style)
position is purported to be most effective.
Many societies also believe that astrology plays an important role
in conception. There are also many couples who feel conception is
linked not only to the menstrual, but also to the lunar cycle. This
is not scientifically proven, but widely believed to be somewhat
accurate. The premise is that the lunar return happens every 29.53
days, and if your particular lunar return cycle concurs with your
menstrual cycle (which only happens a few times a year), your likelihood
of getting pregnant is much higher. Also, prenatal development is
measured in lunar months (which is on a 28 day cycle - like the
menstrual cycle).
Aside from the factors above, there are innumerable concerns which
may be linked to your fertility. If you do not become pregnant in
the first year of trying to conceive, you may wish to attempt the
following:
1- Men- keep the testicles cool - it's better to wear boxers than
briefs.
2- Women- learn how to chart you BBT - basal body temperature.
3- Determine whether high stress levels and the pressure of trying
to get pregnant is preventing you from becoming pregnant and try
to relax.
4- See what effects (if any) your method of birth control had on
making conception more difficult.
5- Examine what changes to diet and exercise will increase your
fertility.
6- Examine how alcohol, drugs and smoking can affect your chances
of conceiving.
7- Determine if an STD (sexually transmitted disease) has decreased
your fertility.
8- Determine whether either of you have any medical reasons why
you might not be able to conceive.
If you as a couple decide that you wish have a child, talk to your
doctor about it, (and obviously stop using birth control)! For women,
it is important to stay away from alcohol, drugs, smoking and certain
medications - even if it is only a possibility that you are pregnant.
Try to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating well and exercising
frequently. Keep in mind that baby making should not be a chore,
but an enjoyable activity, so remember to have lots of fun while
doing it!
